Salaries (2023-2024): PGY1: $59,000  PGY2: $61,117  PGY3: $63,232 

Licensure

To encourage timely application for Texas licensure, our program provides (upon request) a no-interest cash advance of up to $4,000, paid back to Memorial in the form of payroll deductions. Further, Memorial Hermann will reimburse the DEA application cost (currently $888) after working 5 shifts in the PSC After Hours Clinic. In this way, residents get to moonlight for extra spending money and receive reimbursement for a large expense.

Technology and EMR

  • A Dell laptop is provided for use in the hospital, clinic, and home. Model varies by year.
  • Bluetooth mouse provided with laptop.
  • PowerMicMobile dictation application for use from your smartphone.
  • SonoSim Point of Care Ultrasound training system is provided to each resident
  • Memorial Hermann currently utilizes Cerner Care4 and is transitioning to Epic as of May 2024.

Insurance and Investment

Health insurance coverage is available for residents and dependents at group rates. A retirement savings plan is available, with opportunity for immediate matching contributions of up to 6% by Memorial Hermann. Professional liability insurance is provided at no cost to all residents.

Vacation

  • PGY-1: 10 days. For use during three “vacation-able” blocks
  • PGY-2: 15 days. For use during four “vacation-able” blocks
  • PGY-3: 15 days. For use during seven “vacation-able” blocks
Vacation days do not accumulate year-to-year

Sick Days

  • Five days per academic year
  • Sick days do not accumulate year-to-year

Wellness Half Days

  • Six half days per academic year.
  • Can be booked even during non “vacation-able” blocks, for doctor’s appointments or other personal needs.

Parental Leave

  • Paid parental leave is provided through Memorial Hermann
  • Residents can choose to augment this time off with a 4 week Parental Elective.

Continuing Medical Education

  • PGY-1:
    • Two days are allotted for STEP3/COMLEX3 during PGY-1 or PGY-2
    • AAFP Board Review Prep flash drive and online access provided as a study aid
  • PGY-2 & PGY-3:
    • Two days are allotted for STEP3/COMLEX3 during PGY-1 or PGY-2
    • Five working days may be requested for CME use
    • Stipend
  • If traveling: $1200 for travel, meals, lodging, and conference registration
  • If completing CME from home: $600 for educational books or software
  • Additional funding is available for residents who are accepted for a poster or podium presentation at a conference

The residency program covers registration for:

  • American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
  • Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP)
  • American Medical Association (AMA)
  • Texas Medical Association (TMA)
  • Harris County Medical Society (HCMS).

Residents enjoy free periodicals from several of these professional organizations. The monthly American Family Physician is a particular favorite, as it is a wealth of information.

Texas A&M Library

Online access to an extensive library, books, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Lexi-comp, Epocrates, and many more. Texas A&M librarians are available to help with literature searches.

Laundry Service

Fresh hospital-issue scrubs are provided to all residents for hospital use. Lab coats are purchased for each resident (three in the first year and one in each of the next two years) and weekly cleaning service is provided.
