Curriculum Year 1

Continuity Clinic

Based in our clinic, Physicians at Sugar Creek (PSC), this month focuses on ambulatory care and building the resident’s patient panel. The resident is scheduled for multiple full days of clinic each week, during which residents evaluate and treat their own patients under supervision of precepting faculty. The resident also sees patients in the PSC Diabetes Clinic, a dedicated area of PSC where a disciplinary team consisting of the in-house pharmacist, dietician, and rotating resident spend extended time educating, empowering, and treating diabetic patients. Family Medicine Inpatient Service

Each resident is assigned patients on the Family Medicine Service (FMS) at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. The intern, in consultation with the faculty attending and senior resident, manages their patients’ care. Residents gain excellent experience in a wide range of medical problems in one of the most diverse patient populations in Houston. (4 weeks, 2 blocks)

Inpatient Pediatrics

Residents work with pediatric hospitalists to work up and manage various pediatric conditions. With the IMU level of care available at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, residents manage various acute conditions such as asthma exacerbation and bronchiolitis and learn when to transfer to higher level of care settings. The inpatient pediatrics rotation is located at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. (4 weeks, 1 block)

Dermatology

In this outpatient rotation, residents become familiar with adult and pediatric dermatologic conditions. Our 1st year residents work directly with a Dermatologist and gain experience in evaluating and treating skin disorders and performing biopsies, destruction of skin lesions, and various other dermatology procedures. (2 weeks, 0.5 blocks)

Night Float

Residents care for Nursery and Adult patients in the hospital overnight and work with Senior Residents to admit new patients to the service. The schedule is Monday through Friday nights, 5:30PM to 8:00AM. Morning rounds provide for teaching opportunities with faculty at the end of every shift. (4 total weeks, two rounds of 2-week 0.5 blocks)

Obstetrics

Each resident is assigned patients to manage on the busy L&D service at Memorial Herman Southwest Hospital. Residents are active members of the L&D team and will learn to manage labor and common complications of the intra- and post-partum course. Supervision and support for the first year resident is provided directly by faculty and senior resident. The first year resident will also spend time in our own PSC Maternity Clinic during this rotation. (4 weeks, 1 block)

Emergency Medicine

The Memorial Hermann Southwest (MHSW) Emergency Room is a high-volume unit, and residents play an active role. During this rotation, residents gain experience with incision and drainage, laceration repair, and splinting. Working with attending emergency physicians, the residents evaluate and manage patients with a variety of medical and surgical problems. This rotation takes place at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. (4 weeks, 1 block)

Pulmonary Medicine/ICU

Residents round in the ICU in the mornings and attend outpatient pulmonology clinic in the afternoons. In pulmonology clinic, residents will see patient with various acute and chronic pulmonary disease such as pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax, COPD, and asthma. In the ICU, residents will learn about key aspects of critical care including pressors, ventilator settings, antibiotic stewardship, and end of life discussions. This rotation takes place at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and a neighborhood clinic. (4 weeks, 1 block)

Behavioral Medicine

Residents work one-on-one with a psychologist in our clinic, seeing patients with a wide variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, insomnia, inattention, and many more. The resident will also learn about different diagnostic and screening tools and outpatient resources for various psychiatric conditions. By the end of the rotation, the resident will have improved upon their interviewing skills and how to create a safe environment for sensitive conversations with patients. (2 weeks, 0.5 blocks)

Orthopedics

Residents learn foundations in the diagnosis and management of joint injuries and fractures as well as preoperative, operative and postoperative care. Physical examination and techniques in casting, splinting, and joint injections and interpretation of musculoskeletal radiographs are taught. Residents rotate one-on-one with private community orthopedic surgeons. (4 weeks, 1 block)

Dermatology

In this outpatient rotation, residents become familiar with adult and pediatric dermatologic conditions. Our 1st year residents work directly with a Dermatologist and gain experience in evaluating and treating skin disorders and performing biopsies, destruction of skin lesions. (2 weeks, 0.5 blocks)

Cardiology

Residents work with cardiologists at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and their outpatient clinics. Residents participate in hospital consultations and outpatient cardiology clinic. In addition to learning about the management of ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension, residents also learn administration of treadmill testing and receive instruction on interpretation of various cardiac imaging modalities. (4 weeks, 1 block)

General Surgery

The surgery rotation provides direct experience in preoperative evaluation of the surgical patient, surgical assisting, and postoperative management. Residents become skilled at first-assisting. In addition, the resident learns about the diagnosis of common surgical conditions, and when to call a surgical consultation. This rotation takes place at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and in our surgeon’s various clinics. (4 weeks, 1 block)
